Golden Lion house is one of the most exclusive and historic premises in Devon and will make an excellent base for your holiday or short break.The HistoryGolden Lion House was built in 1768 for local surgeon Sir Nicholas Tripe. It was then turned into a coaching inn in late 1700's. Run as a hotel and pub until late 1990's; well known Ashburton landmark and source of lots of stories in the town. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle apparently stayed here whilst researching The Hound of Baskervilles. Much of the 1950 film "Guilt is My Shadow" was filmed in the hotel and town. Headquarters for 20 years of Monster Raving Loony Party - landlord (Alan Hope ... still alive and kicking) was party chairman and also elected Mayor of Ashburton. Renowned London brothel owner was a regular visitor and founded the "Payne and Pleasure" political party there. One time she was visiting, the landlord put up a sign saying "House of Fun" and apparently the Madness song of the same name was written about it (the song also refers to the Lions Den, which was the name of the hotel bar).Converted to a heritage house in 1999. Grade 2* listed.
